The principle of energy generation from biomass is well established and has been successfully implemented in numerous projects worldwide.  The key management factors in the economics of a biomass to energy project are:-

  • the logistics; the movement and handling of the biomass
  • biomass consistency
  • the practicality, maintainability and durability of the technical solution.
One of our processes uses a series of steps to convert biomass to BioCO2al.  This process sees the biomass take on very specific and valuable properties.

BioCO2al  Characteristics
  • Easy handing and improved bulk energy density giving transport savings of up to 40% as compared to conventional pellets.
  • Hydrophobic: re-absorption of moisture (<5%) allowing almost indefinite external storage, preventing biological degredation and reducing the risk of spontaneous combustion
  • Optimum durability/ friability balance (HGI c.35)
  • After processing into BioCO2al  the biomass retains 85% of the original energy (22MJ/kg calorific value) but only 40% of the weight making transport costs significantly lower
  • Low pollution: less than 0.1%  content of sulphur, NOx and SOx (biomass dependant)
The BioCOal process also produces heat and gaseous by-products which can be efficiently re-cycled and converted to energy to fuel the torrefaction process and assist the drying.
